How to Update Social Security After Divorce in Montana

Why Social Security Comes First

The Montana Motor Vehicle Division cross-references the Social Security Administration database to verify your identity, and other agencies may require your SSA record to be updated first. What You Need to File

Submit Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card) at your nearest Montana SSA office. The form is free to download from ssa.gov or pick up in person.

Required documents (originals, not copies):

The SSA typically processes the update and delivers your corrected Social Security card within 10 to 14 business days after receiving your application. The replacement card is free — no fee at any point.

Critical wait period: After the SSA processes your update, wait a minimum of 48 hours before visiting the Montana MVD. The federal database needs this synchronization window to propagate your new name to state systems.

What Changes and What Doesn't

Your Social Security number stays the same — only the name associated with it changes. The SSA updates their records and issues a new card with your restored name, same number.
